ROMAN SCHOOL, circa 1600 - Lot 17
ROMAN SCHOOL, circa 1600 The Virgin Mary depicted in a medallion, surrounded by the verse "Fili quid fecisti nobis sic ego et pater tuus dolentes quaerebamus te" (Luke 2, 48). Oil on copper, on the back two handwritten annotations dating from around 1600. Presented in a spectacular Baroque-style carved and gilded wood frame. 23 x 17 cm Luke, 2, 41-50 : "Every year, Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. When he was twelve, they went on pilgrimage according to custom. At the end of the festival, as they were returning home, young Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, unbeknownst to his parents. Thinking he was in the pilgrims' convoy, they made a day's journey before looking for him among their relatives and acquaintances. When they didn't find him, they returned to Jerusalem, continuing their search. After three days, they found him in the Temple, seated among the doctors of the Law: he was listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him raved about his intelligence and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him: "My child, why have you done this to us? See how your father and I have suffered looking for you!" He said to them, "How is it that you sought me out? Didn't you know that I must be with my Father?" But they did not understand what he was saying to them."
