Jean SERRIERES (1893-1968) - Lot 65
Jean SERRIERES (1893-1968) "Les Tuileries", 1947 Polychrome enamel plaque, signed and dated on the back The plate 23 x 25 cm With frame 35 x 37 cm "The art of enameling then tempted Jean Serrière, and it wasn't long before he was able to penetrate its secrets and extract effects of exceptional preciousness and richness. The compositions with which he covers his plates generally feature nude figures, bathers and oréades in sun-drenched glades or in the cool half-light of undergrowth; some of them are perfect successes, both for the splendor of the colorations and the purity of the forms; the flesh tones, the brilliance of certain blues, the depth of certain greens, sometimes a few scintillating notes of red, all come together in an exalted range to which the quality of the material adds its incomparable magnificence, to make Jean Serrière's enamels authentic works of art". Gabriel Mourey - L'amour de l'art April 1927 (excerpt) Our enamelled plaque is reminiscent of the plaques set into Eugène Printz's exceptional Gabon ebony sideboard, presented at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris in 1948 during the artist's retrospective.
