JAPAN, MYÔCHIN ECOLE - Late EDO period (1603 - 1868)
Openwork iron maru gata in kage-sukashi and chased in taka bori de de bonji. Inscribed on the right side of the seppadai: "Gishi (no) sho (wo) motte" [With the handwriting of (Wang) Xizhi]. Signed Myôchin Sadahide. H. 7.8 cm
Wang Xizhi (in Japanese Ô Gishi, 307?-365?), was China's most famous calligrapher, also revered in Japan. He is credited with his characteristic cursive script. The characters on both sides (忠迷而信言) can be interpreted as follows: "If you fear your loyalty may waver, keep trusting".
