Karl Anton HICKEL (Česká Lipa 1745 - Hambourg 1798)
Portrait of Marie - Thérèse de Savoie Carignan, Princess of Lamballe Canvas, signed and dated lower right A. Hickel pinx / 1788 192 x 128 cm Another version of the painting, also dated 1788 and in a smaller format (66 x 44 cm, Vienna, Liechtenstein Palace), is preserved by the Princely Family of Liechtenstein. Karl Anton Hickel, an itinerant painter, was the official painter to Emperor Joseph II. He worked in Paris between 1786 and 1789, enjoying the protection of Marie-Antoinette and the Princesse de Lamballe. His portrait of the Queen, now lost, is known through engraving. He received numerous commissions from the aristocracy. At the start of the French Revolution, he left France for London, where he continued his brilliant career as a portraitist. Marie - Thérèse de Savoie (Turin 1749 - Paris 1792), married Louis - Alexandre de Bourbon, Prince de Lamballe, son of the Duc de Penthièvre, in 1767. She became a close friend of Marie-Antoinette, then dauphine, who appointed her superintendent of her household. She was later more or less ousted by the Queen's friendship with Madame de Polignac. She met a tragic end during the massacres of September 1792.
