VERNE Jules - Lot 379
VERNE Jules Around the world in 80 days. Doctor Ox. J. Hetzel Bibliothèque d'éducation et de récréation Paris s.d. (1876). Ill. by de Neuville and Benett (Le tour du monde...) and by Bertrand, Froelich, Th. Schuler, Bayard and Marie (Le docteur Ox). Large in. 8 double. Red percaline publisher's boards "aux deux éléphants", bound by Engel (second board type "B" with palmettes). Gilt edges. Original endpapers. Imp. Gauthier-Villars. Catalog "J" in fine for 1877. Engel's "two elephants" are much rarer than Lenègre's and predate Engel's "two elephants" are much rarer than Lenègre's, and predate the latter since they are concomitant with the "banner" cartonnieres. An amusing anecdote for this title, the concomitant "à la bannière" boards keep "Le docteur Ox" (original order) as the first title, whereas here, for the first time, Le Tour du monde goes in front. Bright front cover and spine. Inside free of foxing. Minor wear.
