Model of the J-Class "Rainbow" mahogany base and glass and b - Lot 239
Model of the J-Class "Rainbow" mahogany base and glass and brass display case Circa 1970/1980 Model dimensions: H. 88 cm W. 58 cm Display case size: H. 98 cm W. 86 cm D. 33 cm Provenance: Lannan Ship Model Gallery Boston USA The Rainbow is a 1930 American J-Class racing yacht (40 m long), which won the 1934 America's Cup 4-2 as defender of the New York Yacht Club against the British challenger Endeavour from Thomas Sopwith's Royal Yacht Squadron. This competition yacht (one of the last J-Class built between the wars to defend the America's Cup) was launched on May 15, 1934 by American businessman Harold Stirling Vanderbilt (of the Vanderbilt family), as the successor to his previous vessel Entreprise. This Bermuda-rigged cutter benefits from striking technical innovations such as a flexible boom and a genoa instead of a jib and staysail assembly. The living works are in bronze leaf riveted to steel frames. This aberration, which represented a real electrolytic bomb, did not allow the boat to be kept for very long. It was sold to a scrap dealer in 1940 for demolition.
