Before the First World War (1914-1918), the company was renowned for building high-quality luxury steam yachts.
The SY "Medusa" was built as a luxury yacht for the Rt. Hon. Colonel J. Gretton CBE MP of Stapleford Park, Melton Mowbray, Leicester, It had a figurehead at the bow, some 22 portholes on each side, a three-tiered deck and superstructure, with the funnel positioned just aft of the deck/mudroom, amidships. "Medusa" was one of the most luxurious ships afloat. Every piece of hardware was made of high-quality bronze, copper or brass, and most shone like a new penny. The single bronze propeller was powered by a 3-cylinder triple-expansion steam engine using a boiler.
It remained in service until March 22, 1919, when it was returned to the owner and sold to the famous Guinness family of Ireland.
