Following in the footsteps of the Swedish engineer Chapman and his Architectura navalis mercatoria published in 1768, this work aims for technical accuracy, rejecting "the deceptive picturesqueness that is often the most welcome". Most of the plates feature plans of French and foreign boats and ships.
