Founded in 1855 by brothers Émile and Isaac Pereire under the name Compagnie Générale Maritime, the company was commissioned by the French government to transport mail to North America, and took its definitive name in 1861. From the beginning of the 20th century, it also offered crossings between Marseille and Algiers, and in the 1920s created tourist circuits in North Africa. The company grew in importance from 1910 to 1930.
