Rare Iznik siliceous ceramic ewer with polychrome kaleidosco - Lot 126
Rare Iznik siliceous ceramic ewer with polychrome kaleidoscopic decoration, under transparent colorless glaze
Turkey, Iznik, circa 1580-1590
H. 19.6 cm
This beautiful piriform Iznik pitcher features a rare decoration comparable to that of the so-called "kaleidoscopic" Iznik dishes. There are very few such designs on shaped pieces.
The decoration consists of two friezes, on the base of the body and on the upper part of the neck, of large blue and green palmettes alternating with coral-red leaves. The central part, at the base of the neck, is decorated with a frieze of stylized plant motifs in coral red and green. The sinuous handle is decorated with a frieze of blue dots. The neck is edged with a frieze of black wavelets. (the body is broken and stuck).
