VAN DEN BROEK D'OBRENAN, Charles - Lot 159
VAN DEN BROEK D'OBRENAN, Charles First version of the Voyage de La Korrigane" published by Payot. 1934-1936. In-folio (298 x 218 mm) autograph manuscript of 229 (1-228, 185bis) ff.ch., most of which on watermarked 'Sorel Parchment Paper' written on the versos in blue ink. Unbound, in original folder with autograph title, matching burgundy cloth folder and slipcase. See O'Reilly, 1652. Autograph manuscript, complete, of the account of the expedition of the Korrigane to the Pacific. The Korrigane, a 1915 fishing boat, was converted into a yacht after the First World War. Etienne de Ganay bought it in 1934, and organized under the auspices of the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro a great expedition of two years in the Pacific Ocean with about fifteen close friends. Charles Van der Broek d'Obrenan was in charge of reporting the trip, supported by his wife Régine the artist in charge of the sketches. Nearly 2,500 objects were brought back by the mission, including some masterpieces that are now in the collection of the Musée du Quai Branly. Some researchers suspect that Charles van der Broek had Michel Vaucaire subcontract the writing of his manuscript in order to write the final version of his travelogue that was published by Payot in 1938. Vaucaire was the lyricist for Edith Piaf, who wrote, among other things, the famous song 'Non, je ne regrette rien' (see the exchange of notes between Stéphane Martin, former president of the Quai Branly, and the anthropologist Christian Coiffier). The text was first published in 1934 and 1935 in the newspaper La Géographie. "The Korrigane expedition is at the crossroads between the old voyages of discovery and observation and the voyages of modern ethnology, taking the time to deepen a theme, it is situated at the time when the native cultures are still very much alive. The Second World War will deeply upset many peoples of the Pacific" (Tahiti Heritage). "The author (1909-1956), after having participated in the voyage, became the historian of the Korrigane's cruise around the world. Coming from the Galapagos, the Korrigane arrived in the Marquesas Islands where she stayed from August 20 to September 8. We are in Tahiti on September 14, then on October 31, via Moorea and Bora-Bora, we reach New Zealand" (O'Reilly).
