[TAHITI]. Exposé of the facts which accompanied the aggression of the French against the island of Tahiti, and the unjust establishment of the French domination in this island. By the directors of the London Mission Society. Paris, printed by J. Smith for L.-R. Delay, 1843. Small in-8 (187 x 125 mm) with one f.n.ch. of false-title, VIII, 80 pp. Tan calf with corners, smooth spine, matching slipcase (modern binding).
O'Reilly, 7696.
First French edition of the translation of this work which strongly condemns the annexation of Tahiti by France. It was first published by the London Mission Society.
It includes the speech of Captain Fitzroy, commander of the famous ship the Beagle, on which Charles Darwin traveled. The famous book Voyage of the Beagle, published in 1839, bears witness to this.
"The cession of Tahiti was the result of extortion and violence, the result of Catholic intrigues and a usurpation of the French government" (O'Reilly).
A very good copy of this extremely rare publication
