Voyage around the world, begun in 1708 & finished in 1711. Translated from the English. (index), 9 engraved plates (including 2 large folding maps) for volume I; 1 engraved frontispiece, 1 f.n.ch. of title, 162 pp, 6 engraved plates; 75 pp. 12 ff.n.ch. (index), 4 engraved folding maps (Supplement); 255 pp. 12 ff.n.ch., 1 large engraved folding map (misplaced at the head of the volume) for the Relation. Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, spotted edges (contemporary binding).
Sabin, 72757; Leclerc, 518; Borba de Moraes, II, 745; Howgego, R61.
First edition of the French translation.
The copy is decorated with 2 frontispieces, 13 plates and 7 maps. Borba indicates a total of 22 plates without mentioning the frontispieces (notably 7 plates at the beginning of volume II, and 5 plates for the supplement) but he specifies that "this work is sought after and uncommon and is rare with all the maps and plates".
This voyage was first published in English in 1712; the French translation is preferable because it is much more complete: it is in particular increased by the description of the coasts and the relation of the Amazons.
It is also in this book that we find the account of the discovery of a Scottish sailor named Selkirk, living on the island of J. Fernandez, an account which provided De Foe with the subject of his Robinson Crusoe.
The copy includes the important and large map of the Amazon and part of South America by Guillaume Delisle. Binding slightly stained, corners and headpieces restored; small worm gallery at the bottom of the quires of volume II.
