PARIS, Edmond-François, amiral & HENRICY, Casimir - Lot 124
PARIS, Edmond-François, amiral & HENRICY, Casimir Album pittoresque d'un voyage autour du monde exécuté par ordre du gouvernement français. Paris, Ch. Noblet printing house, circa 1842. Large oblong in-4 (256 x 349 mm) of 2 ff.n.ch., 8 pp. 25 steel engraved plates. Red percale, boards decorated with gilt and oeser with gilt title on upper board, smooth spine with title (publisher's binding). Missing from all bibliographies or specialized collections (Forbes, Ferguson, O'Reuilly, Cordier, Borba de Moraes, Sabin, John Carter Brown). First edition. It contains the account of the sailor Casimir Henricy of the circumnavigation of the Artemisia under the direction of Laplace. The beautiful plates, drawn by François- Edmond Pâris, illustrate the Cape of Good Hope, Moka, Muscat, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Tahiti, Peru, Manila, Honolulu, and other places. Of particular interest is the beautiful view of Hawaii, unknown to Forbes. The plates also illustrate the official account of the voyage published between 1841 and 1854. Disguised as a scientific trip, this expedition was primarily a rescue to end the ban on celebrating the Catholic faith in Hawaii. The album is very rare, and is missing from all major specialized collections. Binding skillfully restored, yellow endpapers renewed.
