A very lively travelogue in which the author mentions, among other things, his experiences with opium as well as a residence chancellor (p. 34) without naming him. It could be Jules Boissière (1863-1897), secretary of Paul Vial. In 1887 he embarked for Indochina where he served as clerk to Paul Bert, civil governor of Annam and Tonkin. Author of the famous novel Fumeurs d'opium, published in 1896, he died suddenly in 1897 at the age of 34.
Méhier de Matusieulx (born in 1860, his date of death is not certain), was an explorer, writer and chargé de mission at the Ministry of Public Instruction. He is the author of several scientific works on the natural history of Vietnam.
Yellowed paper, binding rubbed.
