MARWICK, J.G. - Lot 113
MARWICK, J.G.
The Adventures of John Renton. Kirkwall, W.R. Mackintosh The Kirkwall Press, 1935. In-8 (248 x 154 mm) of 95 pp. 7 plates of reproductions of photographs in black. Green percale, gilt title on upper board, smooth spine (publisher's binding).
First edition in bookstore of the story previously published in serial form in the Brisbane Courier newspaper of 1875.
J.G. Marwick, provost of Stromness on the Orkney Islands in Scotland, tells the story of the young sailor John Renton, kidnapped in San Francisco in 1868, then shipwrecked on an island of cannibals where he lived for 7 years before being rescued. In 1876 he returned to his hometown of Stromness, but returned to Queensland as a government agent. He was killed on Aoba Island on November 9, 1878.
A fine copy of this fascinating account based on the words of John Renton himself.
