LIEUTAUD, Jacques - Lot 101
LIEUTAUD, Jacques Knowledge of the times for the leap year 1704. At the meridian of Paris, published by order of the Royal Academy of Sciences and calculated by Mr. Lieutaud. Paris, Jean Boudot, 1704. In-8 (193 x 120 mm) with an engraved allegorical frontispiece, 1 f.n.ch. of title, 106 pp. 3 folding engraved plates. Speckled calf, triple gilt fillet, spine with ornate nerves, interior roulette, gilt edges on marbling (period binding). Grand-Carteret, 77. First edition of the directory for the year 1704. A complete copy of the frontispiece after Le Pautre, and the 3 maps (celestial map, map of France, map of the moon). There are details for each day of the year for sunrise and sunset, as well as for the beginning and end of twilight. The work also contains tables for celestial motion, as well as details for finding longitudes and latitudes. All calculations were made by Jacques Lieutaud (1660-1733), mathematician and astronomer, member of the Royal Academy of Sciences. He made the calculations between 1702 and 1730 before the work was taken over by Godin, the astronomer sent to Peru with La Condamine. A nice copy, nicely bound at the time.
