First edition of Laplace's second circumnavigation voyage. The purpose of the Artemisia expedition was to serve French commerce by providing information gathered in the lands visited and to protect merchant ships, especially whalers. "In 1835, Laplace received the command of the Artemisia for a second circumnavigation. In his staff, we meet the lieutenant of ship Pâris (who is on his third world tour!) and three young officers, future ministers of the Navy: Dompierre d'Hormoy, Montaignac, and Fourichon. Laplace left Toulon and went first to New York for a diplomatic mission. He then reached the Indian Ocean to complete his previous trip. He stopped in Moka in the Red Sea, in Muscat, in Pondicherry, in Ceylon and reached the Far East via Singapore. He sailed along the coasts of Annam, southern China, stopped in Manila, Batavia, Port Jackson, then crossed the Pacific from south to north towards Tahiti and the Sandwich Islands. In Hawaii, Laplace signed a trade agreement with King Kamehameha III. The Artemisia then sailed along the American coast from San Francisco to Valparaiso, stayed in Rio and returned to Lorient in April 1840. Very rich from a geographical and economic point of view, the voyage of the Artemisia allowed the signing of friendship treaties with the sovereigns of Tahiti and Hawaii. It thus prepared the work of Dupetit Thouars" (Numa Broc). Other points of interest are the information provided on trade on the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula (Muskat, al-Muka and Bandar-Abbas) as well as in Iran. Well completed with the sixth volume devoted to California which is often missing. Illustrated with 31 plates out of text representing the different ports and cities visited, Port Arthur, Tasmania, Honolulu, Manila, Macau, Calcutta, Bombay. The 2 maps are entitled 'Carte générale pour servir aux voyages de La Favorite' and 'Carte politique de l'Inde britannique en 1837'. Copy with dispatch Exceptional copy, enriched with an autograph letter signed on the false-title: "I wish that Jules Habrigon keeps this work as a testimony of the tender attachment of his father-in-law to him. 21 May 1852. C. Laplace". We could not find any trace of Jules Habrigon. Some quires of volume V with heavy foxing, the plates of volume VI are browned. Copy complete with its 2 large folding maps by Ambroise Tardieu and S. Jacobs, and of the 31 plates engraved on steel by Laplante, Durond and Nyon jeun after François Edmond Pâris (1806-1893).
