LA PEROUSE, Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Voyage written according to its original manuscripts, followed by an appendix containing all that has been discovered since the shipwreck until today, and enriched with notes by M. de Lesseps. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1831. In-8 (203 x 122 mm) with a lithographed frontispiece portrait, 3 ff.n.ch. (faux-title, title, editor's note), XVIII, 436 pp. 1 facsimile plate, 1 engraved folding map. Half blue calf, smooth spine decorated with a romantic design with the name 'Ravou' gilt on the tail, marbled edges (period binding). Ferguson, 1452; Chadenat, 3268. First edition, revised and corrected on the manuscript by Lesseps. "Monsieur de Lesseps, who was part of the expedition, was kind enough to review our work, and to add notes that only he was able to provide... This modest scholar, who escaped by a miracle from the fatal destiny which struck so many unfortunate people, [who] had been charged by Lapérouse to bring to France the most interesting part of the voyage. The map, the portrait and the facsimile which accompany this volume, will prove that we have spared neither care nor expense to make it worthy of such an interesting subject" (editor's note). Freckles, notably on the plates. Copy complete with the 3 plates (portrait, facsimile of an autograph letter of La Pérouse, and the large map) nicely bound at the time.
