Pier Paolo CALZOLARI (1943) - Lot 68
Pier Paolo CALZOLARI (1943) Il mio letto cosi deve essere, 1969 Pencil, tobacco and hair on paper, signed and dated 69 to the right and down 56 x 76 cm Pier Paolo Calzolari's early works are characteristic of the Italian Arte Povera, combining organic and chemical materials in stripped-down works. Another work entitled "My bed as it should be" was presented at the Op Losse Schroeven exhibition at the Stadelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1969. The work consists of metal letters on the floor that extend for about two meters, among which, in the middle - in the sentence, a copper element wrapped in foam is arranged. The whole of the elements forms a cross. The metal letters enclose the artist's thought "Il mio letto cosi deve essere" in the sacredness of an epigraph. Overall, it is a poetic and confusing figure. The cross, the bronze letters, the cold ground that recalls the features of a tombstone, the earth with which the copper element is covered, everything calls for the thought of death in a composition that has the same expressive power as a Renaissance vanity. Thus the artist imagines its eternal immobility, the peace of its rest, while exorcising the darkest aspects linked to the idea of death.
