It is dedicated "to Monsieur de Vroÿe" [the flutist Amédée de Vroye (1832-1918)]. About the present manuscript that Vroÿe had refused to return to Saint-Saëns. "I had written a Romance for flute which I dedicated to Mr de Vroÿe and which he played admirably. I had lent him the manuscript of the orchestral accompaniment [...]. For the edition, I was obliged to write another orchestration, which, as it always happens in such cases, was not worth the first one [...]".
