Gavarni. - Lot 148
Gavarni. French painted by themselves (The). Moral encyclopedia of the nineteenth century. Paris (5 vols.) - Province (3 vols.) - The Prism (1 vol.). Paris, Curmer, 1843-1850. 9 vol. large in-8, bradel half red long-grain morocco, spines decorated (later binding). Covers and spines preserved (flyleaves). Abundant illustrations including more than 400 plates, a colored map and nearly 1500 vignettes on wood after Daumier, Gavarni, Grandville, Monnier, Traviès, etc., illustrating 400 texts by Balzac, Petrus Borel, Théophile Gautier, Nerval, Nodier, etc. (complete). All figures outside the text were colored and gummed at the time. One of the most important works published by Léon Curmer, with literary contributions by Balzac, Janin, Karr, Méry, Soulié, Petrus Borel, Monnier, Nodier and Gautier. A few scattered brown spots. Attached, bound in a tenth volume, almost all the covers of the French issues. Indeed, the work appeared in 422 issues under blue or yellow covers, decorated with a drawing by Gavarni. "These covers are interesting," notes Carteret, "for the correspondence and notices printed on them." This volume, of the same format as the series, was bound in red half-maroquin. Making a set of 10 VOLUMES. A very nice copy of this sought-after work.
