Gavarni ; Sand, George ; Stahl, P.-J. ; Gozlan, Léon ; Nodie - Lot 146
Gavarni ; Sand, George ; Stahl, P.-J. Two volumes. Ill. by Gavarni. Paris, J. Hetzel. 1845; 1846. XXXII + 380pp; LXXX + 364pp. Large in-8. Original endpapers. Publisher's black percaline mosaic boards richly decorated on the boards and the spine. Lenègre bookbinder. Gilt edges. Famous collective work proposing a series of small stories drawing an interesting portrait of Parisian life in the middle of the 19th century. It is one of the jewels of what was called panoramic literature, giving a picture of the society through the portrait of representative types and the representation of typical places. The most beautiful jewels of this literature are Le Tableau de Paris de Mercier (1781-1788), Paris ou le livre des cent et un (1831-1832), Les Français peints par eux-mêmes (1840-1842) and Le Diable à Paris (1845-1846). Works almost devoid of freckles. Sumptuous polychrome hardcovers with coruscating golds and interiors devoid of foxing. Complete with the two volumes and the plates. Ex-Libris of Pierre Desmottes.
