Grandville, Jean-Ignace-Isidore. One hundred proverbs. Ill. by Grandville. Paris, H. Fournier. 1845. 400pp. in-8. Original endpapers. Publisher's black percaline boards with monochrome decorations. Gilt edges. "For the Cent proverbes, the artist once again associates himself with the bookseller Henri Fournier in order to produce an original work. The authors of the text, depicted in the title as "three heads under the same cap", are in reality four, all associated with the Charivari: Émile Forgues, author under the pseudonym of Old Nick of Petites Misères de la vie humaine (Fournier, 1843), Taxile Delord, collaborator of the text of Un autre monde, Arnould Frémy and Amédée Achard" (Getty, Guillaume. This is one of Grandville's most popular and successful books, comprising one hundred proverbs, fifty with text illustrated with a vignette in the cul-de-lampe and fifty represented by an illustration by the artist outside the text. Amusing anecdote, Grandville represented himself on p. 354. First edition and first printing of the illustrations in a charming hardback.
