MAGNE Antonin - Lot 415
MAGNE Antonin Captain Buffalo Bill's stadium. The only traveling circus with 4 masts - 3 tracks and 2 stages. 1928-1929. Lithographic poster in 8 panels. Bedos & C° - Lithos, Paris. Not canvas-backed, fair to average condition (for 3 panels): marked median folds, some panels have slightly larger tears and lacks at the outer fold corners, tears along the folds, slightly epidermal paper on the horses at the bottom and in some letters of the title, some moisture stains for an upper panel, tears and folds at the edges, bright and fresh colors. 237 x 626 cm. This poster represents the Bouglione family circus and not that of the famous Buffalo Bill whose international and popular show: "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" ended in 1912: "In the 1920s, many acrobats including the Bougliones had the idea of creating a circus around a big top. But it was necessary to give an attractive and selling name to this establishment, especially since at that time the name Bouglione did not have the fame of today. And so Joseph, known as Sampion Bouglione (1875-1941), the father of the four brothers, had the idea of resurrecting the famous Buffalo-Bill in France. The choice of this name was not due to chance but had been determined by the purchase of a batch of authentic posters of the famous "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" coming from the sale after death of the important collection of Georges Mégé, a former showman deceased in 1923 and, bought at first by the tamer Marcel. A lot of jokes were made about this sign which toured in France and Belgium in 1927 and 1928 under the name of "Stade Capitaine Buffalo Bill". This outraged some scrupulous people but amused many others and made the good fortune of the Bouglione family. After two years, the name Buffalo Bill began to wear out and in 1930 the Bouglione circus became "Cirque International".
