ANONYME - Lot 187
ANONYME Boston Tea Party. "The Whirligig of Time". 1896 Fin de Siècle Tea Party. India and Ceylon Teas. Compliments of the India Tea Association Chamber of Commerce Calcutta, India. Publication. Screen print. Binding, very good condition: trace of a median fold. 52,5 x 39,5 cm. The Boston Tea Party was an American demonstration of the Sons of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts that took place on December 16, 1773. The target was the Tea Act of May 10, 1773, which allowed the British East India Company to sell tea from China in the American colonies without paying taxes other than those imposed by the Townshend Acts. The Sons of Liberty strongly opposed the Townshend Act taxes as a violation of their rights. Protesters, some dressed as American Indians, then destroyed an entire shipment of tea sent by the East India Company. They boarded the ships and dumped the tea chests in Boston Harbor. The British government considered the demonstration an act of treason and reacted harshly. The episode escalated into the American Revolution, becoming an iconic event in American history. The image we present, entitled Tea Party, recalls this historic event and contrasts it decades later with a completely different Tea Party in the right-wing frame.
