Christian KRASS (1868-1957)
Low table in Macassar ebony veneer and bone lozenge frieze It rests on four black-stained wooden godroned ball feet connected by a strut Stamped " Christian Krass " on the reverse Created after a model by Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann H : 41 cm W: 145 cm D: 78 cm Bibliography: Florence Camard, "Ruhlmann", Éditions du regard, Paris, 1983, model referenced in situ on period photographic documents and reproduced p. 99; "Ruhlmann, un génie de l'art déco", collective work, Somogy, Éditions d'art, Paris, 2001, similar model, without dotted lines, reproduced in situ on period documents on p. 170 and in color on p. 171. Some of Christian Krass's creations tend to be associated with those of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, to the point of being called the "Ruhlmann of Lyon. This kinship is found in the use of precious materials such as ebony from Gabon, mahogany from Cuba, ivory or tortoiseshell with a refined and elegant work of lines and veneer for a pure rendering of forms. At times, the relationship is so close that it suggests a collaboration between the artists that goes beyond the simple slavish imitation of Ruhlmann's models with modifications in the forms and treatment of the surfaces. We can therefore think of an association linked to a possible stay of Krass in Ruhlmann's studios with possible commissions from the latter.
