Lacquered wooden quarter-circle with the... - Lot 178 - Tessier & Sarrou et Associés
Lacquered wooden quarter-circle with the lines and inscription in red and black, signed (in the apex), لامع نم يلبترشلا دمحا ريقفلا The work of the poor (or humble) Aḥmad al-Sharbatlī (H)1254 (1838/39) 135 x 125 mm Thickness 11 mm Obverse: the limbus is marked with a degree scale reading to 1°; the center bears the Profeit Tibbon astrolabe-quadrant graphic (quadrans novus); a diagram for unequal hours is in the apex with date and signature Reverse: the diagram of sine and cosine sexagesimal crossed by an arc drawn from 42° 30' which represents the first prayer of the afternoon. From Aḥmad al-Sharbatlī two other quarter-circles are known, each drawn for 30° the latitude of Cairo and more generally Egypt, and a qibla indicator also drawn for 30° (Brieux-Maddison 424-5; 467). The name, al-Sharbatlī, suggests a Turkish origin for our maker. The inscription explains how to compensate for the time of year when one cannot make direct readings on the ecliptic, part of which is hidden by the projection.
