CHARDIN (Jean Antoine)
Voyage of M. le Chevalier Chardin in Persia, and other places of the East. Amsterdam, Jean Louis Delorme, 1711. 10 volumes in-12 tan calf, spines decorated, title page in red mar., gilt tomaison, contemporary binding. First complete edition, in-12 format. It is illustrated with a portrait of the author in frontispiece, a repeated vignette on the titles, and 78 folding engraved plates, including a large engraved map. Jean Chardin made a first trip to Persia from 1665 to 1670, but because of the difficulties made in France to the Protestants, he left in 1671, went back to Persia, visited Persepolis twice, went to India and returned to Europe in 1680 by the Cape of Good Hope. Endowed with a keen sense of observation, his travel accounts are still of great interest today; they are an important source on Persian culture and civilization of the time. (Small missing parts)
