History of Lorraine. Volume One. In-8 full old red morocco with the arms of the house of France in the center of a central composition crowned and surrounded by the orders of the golden fleece, of Saint-Michel, and of the Holy Spirit: plates with a triple gold border, second plate with two darkenings, one in the center, the other at the edge of the arms, spine with 5 nerves decorated with gold floral decorations, title and tome on green leather, three gilt edges, counter-plates with a roulette. Paris chez Valade / Nancy chez les principaux, imprimerie Thomas père et fils, 1777. First edition. Handwritten note in ink on the flyleaf "There has been printed only this volume, and it is a pity, because the author presents things with precision and clarity / The volume is rare and of high price". Bookplate pasted on, and handwritten on the title page, from the library of Abbé Herbinot de Neufchâteau. This history of Lorraine, by one of Buffon's collaborators, remained unfinished, only the first volume was published.
