MACHIAVEL Nicolas / MACHIAVELLI Niccolo :
Historie fiorentine. In-octavo half red morocco, red percaline boards with gold borders, spine with 5 false nerves, gold framed boxes, gold lettering, date at the foot, hinges darkened and restored, back covers with roulette, three gilt edges, full cardboard case Printed in Florence Bernardo di Giunta March 16, 1532. First edition. The Roman printer Baldo and the Florentine Giunta published this text almost simultaneously, fighting for priority. Giunta had the approval of the heirs, Baldo the papal privilege, sponsor of the text. It is assumed that the Roman edition, dated March 25, 1532, precedes Giunta's by two days, but some copies like this one are dated March 16 in Florence... which date is true? The mystery remains. Printing in Italian, Roman characters, one column of 36 lines. White space left for the initials. Title page with rules in pale red on both sides, and a woodcut with cherubs. Occasional handwritten notes in the margins, cut by the binder. Few stains, wormholes at the end of the book, last two leaves yellowed and restored, otherwise fresh interior. Missing the errata page. Long handwritten note on the flyleaf emphasizing that this is probably the first edition and recalling the history of this book At the request of Julius de' Medici, Machiavelli, then in disgrace with the city authorities, began the first national biography in Italian literature. He devoted 6 years to it. The final work is presented to the now Pope Clement VI. The death of the author and the sack of Rome in 1527 delayed the publication until 1532.
