METHODIO : Methodius primu[m] olimpiade et... - Lot 14 - Tessier & Sarrou et Associés
METHODIO : Methodius primu[m] olimpiade et postea Tyri ciuitatum episcop[us] sub diocleciano Imperatore in Calcide ciuitate (que nigropontum appellatur vt diuus scribit hieronimus martyrio) coronature qui cu[m] eruditissimus esser vir multa editit documenta et prefertim de mundi creatione eidem in carcere reuelata passus fuit quartadecima kalendas octobris In-octavo full cream vellum bradel, smooth spine, gold lettering "Revelatio / fac / B. / Methodio", binding signed E. Cabry Basel imprint, Michael Furter 1500 ed. Sebastian Brant Latin printing, one column of 36 lines with margins. Letters and woodcuts: 58, showing Adam and Eve driven out of paradise, their genitals rubbed and hidden by a diamond in ink a posteriori, the birth of the antichrist by caesarean section, Gog and Magog, battle scenes ... On the title page a handwritten note "ad B. Matrem Dolorosam 1727", and a stamp whose content is erased on the verso of the last leaf. Restoration and short margin on the first two leaves, traces of wetness on the edges of the first 20 leaves, a few wormholes otherwise fresh interior. Collection of prophecies attributed to Saint Methodius, bishop of Tyre and comments on the Turkish invasions by Wolfang Aytinger. First illustrated edition in 1498, this one uses the same figures. Complete with the preface of the editor Sebastien Brant. Certainly the oldest text we have on the function of illustrations in a text: Brant underlines the necessity of the image to allow a wider readership, and to reach the "ignorant".
