BRANT Sebastian :
Stultifera navis. LA NEF DES FOUS In-octavo full cream vellum, smooth and mute back. Printed in Basel by Johann Bergmann de Olpe March 1497 First edition of the first translation or adaptation of Das Narrenschiff (1494) into Latin by Jacques LOCHER, a former student of Brant, and under the supervision of the author, for a better diffusion on a European scale. Brant added a commentary: mainly biblical or ancient quotations, printed in the margins. Complete with 117 woodcuts partly by Albrecht DÜRER (75 are attributed to him), almost one per chapter. Paper slightly yellowed, a few pages restored, 2 ff. (chap.XII) from another edition, margins lined, a few stains otherwise overall fresh interior, a few handwritten notes in margins, bookplate of Pierre Gelis-Didot. LA NEF DES FOUS, a pessimistic, satirical and moralizing picture of the human condition. A story of some 7000 verses staging the various types of madness and the failings of humanity, in a form close to that of the "dances of death" and where the bibliophile is not spared!
