Manuscript book of hours. Bound in full brown... - Lot 1 - Tessier & Sarrou et Associés
Manuscript book of hours. Bound in full brown leather, on the spine and an irregular edge of about 1cm, vellum, smooth spine and mute. Small book of hours on paper, containing a calendar in French (ff. 1-12), the hours of the Holy Cross (ff. 13-18) and the hours of Our Lady for the use of Rome (ff. 19-85) in Latin. Body of the manuscript : 4,5x7 cm, ruled in pale red ink, black ink. One column of 14 lines, in gothic letters. Headings in red and blue ink, a few heightened initials and a few line-ends in blue or red, 7 initials of 4 lines high heightened in both colors. 86 ff, recto verso, the last one blank with rules. Two notes on the title page, one dated December 9, 1555. In the calendar of later additions of saints (late 16th) by hand, brown ink. One can see through the black ink stains they have left, two attempts at lettering in the margin, ff. 19 and 50, the second being an A. Some soiling, the second half of the book slightly warped, 3 ff. with a fold and ff.47 perforated in the margin. Small book of hours, without miniatures, probably intended for the trade as it was not very personalized, the clientele being able to include a posteriori coats of arms, additions to the calendar etc. Popular books of hours in the 15th century.
