VERITABLE HISTOIRE ET DESCRIPTION D'UN PAYS habité par des hommes sauvages nus, féroces et anthropophages, situé dans le nouveau monde nommé Amérique. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1838, in-8 of 2 ff.n.ch. and 335 pp. in red half-chagrin, spine decorated with gilt and cold-stamped fillets, untrimmed, partly uncut [Rel. of the 20th century], some foxing. Sabin, 90059. Third volume of the Voyages, relations et mémoires originaux pour servir à l'histoire de la découverte de l'Amérique, published by Henri Ternaux-Compans. This is the first French version of the relation of Hans Staden, of Homburg in Hesse, which appeared in German in Marburg in 1557 (1 vol. small in-4). De Bry had it translated into Latin, and inserted it in his Collection des grands voyages. Staden relates here his trip to Brazil where he stayed from 1547 to 1555, and details the manners and customs of the Tupinambas among whom he had been taken prisoner. A good copy.
