SCHMIDEL (Ulrich).
HISTOIRE VERITABLE D'UN VOYAGE CURIEUX DANS L'AMERIQUE ou le nouveau monde, par le Brésil, et le Rio de la Plata, depuis l'année 1534, jusqu'en 1554. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1837, in-8, brown half-chagrin, spine decorated with gilt and cold-stamped fillets, untrimmed, covers preserved [Rel. du XXe siècle], a few freckles. 2 ff.n.ch., VIII and 264 pp. Sabin, 77686. Fifth volume of Voyages, relations et mémoires originaux pour servir à l'histoire de la découverte de l'Amérique, published by Henri Ternaux-Compans. Ulrich Schmidel, from Straubing in Bavaria, embarked in Antwerp in 1534 for Brazil. He went up the Rio de la Plata, then the Parana and then the Parabol river, which led him to meet Indian peoples such as the Gulgaïsis, the Mepenes, the Cuérémagbas, the Aygais and the Carios. After a long stay and several adventures, he returned to Antwerp in 1554. His report appeared for the first time in Frankfurt in 1567, then in Nuremberg, with Levinus Hulsius, in 1599; this last edition, the most complete, is here translated into French. A good copy.
