GIBBON (Lardner A.).
MAP DRAWN BY LIEUT. LARDNER GIBBON to accompany his report. [Washington], A. Hoen, 1851-1854, 2 folding maps (51 x 60 or 77 cm) folded to in-8 format, in sheets, in publisher's tobacco percaline folder, smooth mute spine, cold framing on the boards, title pushed in gilt letters in the center of the upper board. These two maps document the perilous voyage of exploration of the Amazon valley, still deprived of certain cartography, led in 1851-1852 by the two American officers William Lewis Herndon (1813-1857) and Lardner Gibbon (1820-1910); they form the cartographic complement of the voluminous report addressed in 1853 by the two men to the Secretary of the Navy, John Pendleton Kennedy, and which forms the basis of the publication intended for the general public, entitled Exploration of the valley of the Amazon (1853-54). The first map is entitled Boiling water measurements of heights above sea level, the second presents the itinerary of the expedition from Lima to Brazil. See Sabin 31524 (for text).
