[BOUCARUT (Alcide)].
Manuscript in Spanish. S.l.n.d. [ca. 1858], folio (35 x 22.4 cm), paperback. 1 f.n.c. (title) and 16 pp.n.c., plus 2 pp.n.c. on a double loose leaf. In 1857, Alcide Boucarut published a "Manuel de navigation dans le Rio de la Plata, d'après les documents nautiques les plus récents recueillis et mis en ordre" (see Polak, 1004). The following year, an expanded Spanish translation appeared in Madrid, prepared by Commander Miguel Lobo and Lieutenant Pedro Riudavets. The present manuscript is a copy of the additions given by Lobo and Riudavets in their 1858 edition; it corresponds to the notes located between pages 10 and 29 of the printed work. These additions concern the northern part of the Rio de la Plata, located in Uruguay: Isla Castillo Grande; Isla de Tierrao; Castillo Chico; Ensenada de Castillos; Punta del Polonio; Isla de Torres; Sierra del Carbonero; Puerte de San Miguel; Cerro de Buena Vista, etc. The two tables on the loose leaf give the geographical position of the main sites of the Rio de la Plata, according to Spanish, French and English maps. This extract was probably used by Ernest Mouchez for his work entitled "Nouveau manuel de la navigation dans le Rio de la Plata d'après les documents français et espagnols réunis par MM. Boucarut, Lobo et Riudavets" (Paris, P. Dupont, 1862; see Polak, 6872). The future admiral had carried out numerous hydrographic works in this region when he commanded the aviso le Bisson between 1856 and 1860. See Taillemite, pp. 384-385. Provenance: Ernest Mouchez's personal archives.
