Monumental pair of white marble greyhounds resting on a rect - Lot 173
Monumental pair of white marble greyhounds resting on a rectangular pedestal, with rounded edges, decorated all around with acanthus leaves in antique style. On the surface of the pedestal in Cyrillic character "Moscow" and the date 1875 in Roman numerals; the name "Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich Romanov" and the letters "Б . Д П . Ф . Х ЗЛ . РО" H. 99 cm W. 130 cm D. 40 cm approx. Provenance: collection of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich (1847-1909) who was the brother of Alexander II and the eldest of the Grand Dukes. This prince was an eminent art collector and financed Diaghilev's ballets. This breed of hunting dogs, appreciated in antiquity and in the Middle Ages, was saved from extinction thanks to the efforts of the British officer Graham, who crossed them with the bar zoois, which were very popular at the Russian court. The sculpture is treated with realism and accentuates the musculature of the animal and the firmness of the joints, giving the idea of tension and strength. The face is thin, reminiscent of the elegance of the barzoi, but with an august hardness. The position of the ears marks the attention and the vigilance. This breed is represented, in a different position, at the same period for the entrance of the domain of the Troubetzkoï princes in Khamovnikakh. Expert: Ivan BIRR = 07 50 35 80 58
