Elegant in the winter garden Oil on canvas, signed lower right 130 x 97 cm (restorations) Madeleine Lemaire, born Jeanne Magdelaine Colle, was a French painter, illustrator and salon owner. She was a student of Jeanne-Mathilde Herbelin (1820-1904) and Charles Chaplin (1825-1891) and specialized in genre scenes. She made her debut at the 1864 Salon, where she exhibited throughout her life, receiving awards in 1877 and 1900. She also exhibited at the Salon de la Société d'aquarellistes français from 1879. She was one of the models who inspired the character of Madame Verdurin in In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust.
