Paul JOUVE (1878-1973)
Rooster, circa 1942 Pencil, blur and India ink on pearlescent Japan paper Signed, dry-stamped with a panther's head lower right 25 x 18 cm For the 1900 World's Fair, Jouve was commissioned to create a large sculpture representing a rooster with spread wings to decorate the monumental entrance door of the exhibition. He will realize many studies on this subject. Various studies of a rooster were also executed for the cover of the literary and artistic magazine Chanteclair to illustrate the cover of issue 308, in November 1935. Our drawing, made around 1942, is one of the studies undertaken in anticipation of the illustration of the Roman de Renard in the version by Maurice Genevoix, published in 1958. Jouve began the illustrations for this book in 1942, however this version was not retained for the book.
