François STAHLY (1911-2006) Tizian Léopold Heinrich Erhad Stahly, also known as François Stahly, was born in Constance, Germany on March 8, 1911. In 1912 his family moved to Switzerland. During his youth, Stahly worked in a printing shop and learned the trade of lithographer. From 1926 onwards, he attended painting and sculpture classes at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Wintherthur and at the School of Fine Arts in Zurich. François Stahly moved to Paris in 1931 and continued his studies at the Académie Ranson where he was a student of Malfray and Maillol. In 1937 the artist received his first public commission, a portico for the Pavillon de la Femme at the Paris International Exhibition. The following year he met and exhibited with Manessier, Etienne-Martin, Klinger, Le Moal, Bertholle and became a member of the Committee of the Salon de Mai in Paris. In Grasse he met Jean Arp, Alberto Magnelli, Sonia Delaunay, Ferdinand Springer and Nicolas de Staël. In 1947, he obtained French nationality and participated in the second Salon des Réalités Nouvelles where he exhibited every year until 1982. The year 1946 was marked by his meeting with Brancusi. In 1948, he participated in the manifesto exhibition HWPSMTB (Hartung, Wols, Picabia, Stahly, Mathieu, Tapié Bryen) at the Galerie Colette Allendy. The following year, he set up his studio in Meudon and exhibited with Etienne-Martin at the Galerie Jeanne Bucher. In 1953 his first solo exhibition took place at the Galerie Paul Fachetti. Between 1960 and 1965, Stahly worked in the United States and taught at the University of California at Berkeley and organized the collective workshops in Aspen, Colorado. During this period, he also completed numerous public commissions, such as a stainless steel fountain for the Kayser Steel Company in Fontana. In 1964, he was commissioned to create "Summer of the Forest" for Nelson Rockefeller's private park in Tarrytown. Returning to France in 1966, he completed two important public commissions: The Labyrinth at the University of Jussieu in Paris and the Fountain at the Parc Floral de Vincennes. In 1973, his wife Claude Stahly died. Very affected by this event, the artist will stop his work for a while. A few years later, Stahly met Parvine Curie, a young sculptor whom he married in 1975. François Stahly produced a wide variety of works. From his first sculptures in wood, marble and bronze, to his monumental works (such as the series of fountains, arrows and reliefs destined for public spaces), a last period of creation will follow, which will be more introspective, more intimate and during which the artist will dedicate himself exclusively to drawing. François Stahly's work will be deeply marked by a very close relationship with nature. He evoked this link in these terms: "Wood, this living and seductive material which incites us to follow the sinuosities of its growth".
