Pierre DE BELAY (1890-1947)
"Master of Moro Giafferi" Charcoal and ink drawing. Framed under glass. 33 x 25 cm. Attached is a caricature of three hilarious lawyers, ink and wash drawing. Under glass, frame damaged. In July 1933, the Stavisky affair broke out, which led to a political crisis following the alleged suicide of the businessman. Pierre de BELAY attended the trial and drew many sketches (court scenes, pleadings, etc.). The artist notes in his notebooks the faces of the defendants, the mimics of the jurors, the attitudes of the lawyers, in a spirit close to caricature. Known as the greatest lawyer of the interwar period, Vincent de Moro Giafferri had a career lasting several decades, punctuated with resounding trials. In 1921, he was the defender of Landru, whose head he almost saved. He was also the defender of Dieudonné of the Bonnot gang in 1913, and this time he succeeded in his task. His name is attached to the Caillaux, Humbert, Stavisky, Grynszpan, Weidmann, La Cagoule trials and so many others, sometimes with less media coverage.
