Amazing sword of academician of Mr. Charles KUNSTLER (Pissos, 1887 - Paris, 1977) Elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1954. Heavy gilded bronze mount, chased and engraved. Spindle with four sides. Pommel decorated with a frieze of wolf's teeth and chevrons mixed, enamelled black. It is signed, on the back of the quillons, "Arthus Bertrand Edit." on the left and "Quinqaud Sc." on the right, representing, of face, the profile of "the queen Marie-Antoinette", of back, the profile of "Watteau", on the sides, on the right in a banner, "François Villon", on the left in a banner, the Empress Josephine". Guard with two long inverted ribbon quillons, rolled up, chiseled with the inscriptions, in the center, "Marie Antoinette", on the right, "Fersen", on the left, "Gauguin". Mounted on a pyramidal base with a pattern decorated with striations and wolf's teeth on a black enamel background. Straight blade with four sides. Wooden scabbard covered with black granite morocco, with two large gilded brass fittings, with beads. Oval cap knob chased with the number "CK". Length : 93 cm. T.B.E. In a wooden case covered with black moire leather. Charles Kunstler, (Pissos, 1887 - Paris, 1977), French art historian and poet. Career: - 1905-1909. Studied law and medicine in Bordeaux. - 1909-1913. School of Fine Arts in Bordeaux. - 1913. Settled in Paris; participated in the Salon des Humoristes - 1943-1945. President, then honorary president of the Maison des Journalistes. - 1949-1957. President of the Syndicat de la Presse artistique française. - Member of the Pen-Club. - Member of the Société des Gens de Lettres (vice-president). Officer of the Legion of Honor; Croix de guerre 1914-1918; Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters; Military Medal. Elected, on June 16, 1954, free member of the Academy of Fine Arts, in the chair of Jean BOURGUIGNON (1956, section of free members). President for 1974. Hans Axel Von Fersen (1755-1810). Swedish count famous for his role as a favorite of Queen Marie-Antoinette thanks to his advantageous physique, then he became one of the royal couple's familiars. He took part in the American War of Independence in 1780. In 1791, Fersen took part in the flight to Varennes, where he was one of the main organizers. In 1792, Fersen helped prepare a European coalition against the French Revolution. He inspired the "Brunswick manifesto". He firmly believed in the quick victory of the coalition and even imagined the restoration of the royalty. In 1793, after the execution of Louis XVI, he still hoped to save the queen but could not prevent her execution on October 16, 1793. François Villon, François de Montcorbier dit Villon, (Paris, 1431-1463), French poet of the late Middle Ages. Watteau Jean-Antoine, (Valenciennes,1684-Nogent sur Marne,1721), French painter, who became famous for his representations of gallant parties, he is the creator of the "rocaille" movement inspired by the commedia dell'arte. Second prize of Rome in 1709 Paul Gauguin, (Paris, 1848-Martinique, 1909), post impressionist painter, leader of the Pont Aven School, considered as one of the major French painters of the 19th century. Anna Quinquaud, (Paris, 1890-Fontenay Trésigny, 1984), French sculptor. Became 1st great prize of Rome in 1924. Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1932. Arthus Bertrand, medallists and jewellers, French company created in 1803 in Paris by Claude Arthus Bertrand. It designs and produces civil and military medals and decorations for France as well as foreign distinctions, orders and merits for other countries. It supplies the medal of the Legion of Honor and engraves the large collar of the Legion of Honor worn by the presidents of the French Republic. Arthus-Bertrand also manufactures swords for academics, trophies, watches, jewelry and goldsmith's items and uses historical manufacturing processes.
