Sword of Léon BERTRAND (Arville, 1869 - Paris, 1947), member of the Academy of Sciences, elected in 1945, "His friends - His pupils ". Gilded bronze mounting. Spindle with pommel with sides in point, partly decorated with a medallion representing the portrait of "Léon Bertrand" of profile, struck on the side of two derricks, decorated in high part and low part of wavelets. Branch of guard in branch of olive tree. Geometrical right quillon ending with two points with three sides, engraved on the back "To Léon Bertrand. His friends - His students". Small keyboard decorated with symbolic motifs. Straight blade with four sides. Metal scabbard covered with smooth black morocco, with two large gilded brass fittings with beading. Rectangular cap knob decorated with a crowned eagle resting on waves, signed "Arthus Bertrand Edit." on the left quillon and "G. Deicha" under the neck of the portrait. Length : 100,5 cm. T.B.E. Léon Bertrand, French geologist, officer of the Legion of Honor. Professor of geology at the University of Toulouse Studies and researches on the geology of the Pyrenees, and more particularly on stratigraphy and tectonics; he demonstrates the existence of nappe de charriage. Director of the geology laboratory of the École normale supérieure in 1904. He is partly responsible for the discovery of the natural gas deposit of Saint Marcet following his study of the geological structure of 1921 north of Saint-Gaudens; the deposit was discovered in 1937. In 1945 he was elected member of the Academy of Sciences. G. Deicha, (1917 - Louveciennes, 2011), sculptor and medalist. French geologist and mineralogist known for his pioneering work on fluid inclusions. He is also known for his sculpted works, notably his medals Arthus Bertrand, medallists and jewelers, a French company founded in 1803 in Paris by Claude Arthus Bertrand. It designs and produces civil and military medals and decorations for France as well as foreign awards, orders and merits for other countries. It supplies the medal of the Legion of Honor and engraves the large collar of the Legion of Honor worn by the presidents of the French Republic. Arthus-Bertrand also manufactures swords for academics, trophies, watches, jewelry and goldsmith's items and uses historical manufacturing processes.
