Kees VAN DONGEN (1877-1968)
Portrait of an Elegant Woman, circa 1940 Wash and watercolour on paper, signed lower left 58 x 47 cm (restorations) Provenance: Private collection, Paris. Kees Van Dongen was that eccentric man who quickly sought to make his mark in Paris by taking the best of every moment and making the most of every encounter! Initially an illustrator of anarchist publications, he followed the avant-garde that he found interesting and looked at the work of others, sometimes plagiarising it: Monet, Degas or Toulouse Lautrec. However, his strength in painting made him stand out and move from bohemia to the European social circles. On the eve of the First World War, Van Dongen met the Marquise Casati and above all Jasm y Jacob, who became his companion. These two muses led the painter into the artistic circles of the Roaring Twenties, where he met the Baroness of Oettingen, Apollinaire, Kisling, Picasso and Max Jacob, whom he had known from his days in the Montmartre bohemia. Van Dongen organized balls in his studio and was part of the socialites of Paris, which earned him, once again, numerous portrait commissions that are the chronicle of an artistic avant-garde. Anatole France, Jasmy, Geneviève Vix, Maria Ricotti, Anna de Noailles and Charles Rappoport were among the most famous people he portrayed.
