Large dental case of Doctor OUDET, King Louis Philippe's dentist, in the shape of a book Covered with green morocco decorated with gold and red marbled paper, closed by two snaps, marked on the back "Dr. OUDET" in gold. Lined inside with scarlet moire and a bellows housing in the lid. It contains two trays made of composite elements. On the upper tray: - Twelve dental surgery instruments in polished steel, eight with horn handles and gold fittings and four with ebony handles with shield and silver fittings. - One lancet with horn plates. - Seven file and saw blades. - One silver curette with ivory handle. - Two saw and file holders with ebony handles, screw mounting. - Two instruments in polished steel, glazed, to be mounted on ebony handles with spring button system. - One reverso type mirror, vermeil day mount with horn handle. - One instrument in polished steel and brass with ebony handle. (a chisel is missing). On the lower shelf: - A polished steel instrument with ivory handle with squared sides. - Two polished steel mirrors, one with handle engraved with foliage and birds; the other with handle engraved with foliage and birds on a gold background. - Another mirror type reverso in vermeil, mounting with days on ivory handle carved partly with days, engraved on one of the plates "O" (Oudet) on a Legion of Honor. - An instrument in polished glazed steel, with brass wheel, handle in ivory cut with sides, carved with days. - A mirror of curved form in cut vermeil. Weight: 17g. All these elements are in very good condition. At the bottom of the box are three printing plates for business cards, two in the name of Doctor Oudet, member of the Academy of Medicine and the King's dentist, and one for "Dr. Oudet's mouth liqueur". July Monarchy - Second Empire period. Dimensions: H. 77 x 205 x 310 mm. Nota bene: It was found in the bellows compartment of the lid, a photocopy of a handwritten note "My father had this box of instruments made for the King, but these instruments are so well preserved that I think my father did not use them. I believe that this box was returned to him after the February revolution and the sack of the Tuileries castle". Signed "E.O". Biography: Jean Etienne OUDET (1790-1868) Not content with following the specialty honorably, and attracting an excellent clientele, Oudet made himself known by works that place him among those who have advanced dentistry. Born in Paris to a hernia surgeon, Oudet was an intern surgeon at the Hôpital des Vénériens and at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris, a student at the École pratique and a doctor of medicine. His merit earned him the titles of dentist to King Louis-Philippe, member of the Academy of Medicine, Knight of the Legion of Honour and Gustav Wasa of Sweden.
