AUBUSSON
Polychrome wool flat-stitch carpet with a central circular medallion with lions and sea griffins in mandoras underlined by swords, axes and pikes, in a starry frame. Almond green and olive field with floral motifs in a grid pattern. Border of flowering stems with the corners of boxes decorated with birds of prey defeating a snake. Early 19th century. 444 x 485 cm. (Restored and lined) The design of this carpet is reminiscent of those made by Etienne de Lavallée, known as Lavallée-Poussin (1733-1793), some of which were used by the Beauvais and Gobelins factories.
