Elie CAILLAUD (actif vers 1925-1960)
Rare screen with metal frame enclosing polychrome stained glass windows showing peacocks in a garden and architectural landscape Signed and located lower left "Elie Caillaud Bx Circa 1930 H : 179 cm L : 282 cm (Slight accidents) Elie Caillaud, a very famous painter-glassworker of Bordeaux and unjustly ignored today, was from 1926, the director of the Bordeaux workshop Delmas, he succeeded its founder Léon Delmas who died in 1920. He made stained glass windows for many historical monuments and ensured their restoration. He was one of the few to maintain the tradition of figurative stained glass until the post-war period, as shown by those he executed for the church of Saint-Médard-en-Jalles in 1946. He was also the one who restored one of the only old stained glass windows in the church of Saint-Michel in Bordeaux to have survived the bombardments, that of the chapel of Notre-Dame de Bonne-Nouvelle. The screen we are presenting is one of the rare private commissions he carried out.
