Butterfield silver horizontal sundial Upper plate engraved with interlacing, two scales for latitudes 45 and 40 and Roman numerals. Adjustable gnomon with bird. On the back, list of cities with their latitudes, rosettes under the compass and foliage on the spring. Marked with a fleur-de-lis for the years (1680-1681) Signed CHAPOTOT in Paris Louis XIV period, travel case L. 6,5 cm Gross weight : 34,93 g (good condition) Louis CHAPOTOT was a manufacturer of optical and scientific instruments. He was active in Paris from 1670 to 1700 at the quai de l'Horloge du Palais à la Sphère. He was Guillaume Ménard's apprentice and was named master of the corporation of founders. He produced many types of instruments such as sundials, microscopes, surveying instruments. His son Jean continued the business until about 1721. The travel sundials are called Butterfield after Michael Butterfield (1635-1724). Of English origin, he worked in France from 1677 and made his first examples of this type of sundial from 1680 onwards. He is considered as the father of these dials which were produced in Paris from the end of the XVIIth century until the middle of the XVIIIth.
